Inspired by the dedicated efforts of a woman on a mission to help injured younger veterans to transition between employments, to undertake the challenges of being injured and finally, by forging new careers for themselves. The inspiration for Slouch Hat Chocolates is from the tireless and dedicated efforts made by a retired Army Major, Maryann Martinek, who commenced the business of making a chocolate in the shape of the digger's slouch hat in 1998. Maryann Martinek enlisted into the Australian Army as a general recruit on 3 Feb 1981, served as a Sapper trained as an Illustrator Repro in RASvy Corps qualifying for CPL selection in 1982 prior to officer selection training and graduation from the Officer Cadet School at Georges Heights Mosman NSW on 8 Dec 1983. Major Martinek retired as Fit Everywhere (FE) Class 1 after 20 years of dedicated service on 20 Jul 2001. Media reporting otherwise is inaccurate.
