The original singer of Piece of My Heart was Erma Franklin, Aretha's sister. Although, Willie May Thornton was a HUGE influence on Janis Joplin. They performed together once in San Fransisco. Peace.

Just remember folks, that this is the woman who wrote this song, that Elvis made so popular, and Buddy Guy "ain't no slouch" either when it comes to blues guitar. I just want us to remember where even the "famous guys" like Elvis, got their stuff. Marc Trainor.

No, it was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller; 2 white Jewish writers. Elvis' version was based on one he heard Freddie Bell sing.

Hey, all you Elvis mashers and Big Mama mashers, let's look at the reality here. In my eyes, Big Mama did it first, she had a ton of soul, and sang her ass off, then Elvis did a more "rock and roll" version of the song, that I personally like, but they're two differen versions. Let's be fair. They both did a good job in my book, but by all means let's give Big Mama some credit for writing it and performing it first. Marc Trainor.

Ok, I gotta' eat "big bad crow" on this one!!!! I just went to the enyclopedia thing on Big Mama, and it appears that Liber and Stoler really did write this song. (Boy what a duo they were) so I was wrong that Big Mama wrote it, but I still say that we need to try and respect her for doing it before Elvis, but I personally still love Elvis's more "rock and roll" version of this song. Marc Trainor.

Love both versions! White and black! Shows how Rock'n roll began! Who gives a crap what color you are! Part of black heritage influencing our world for the better! All of the artists don't have a problem with colour neither should we. Elvis loved Black music and blacks loved the way Elvis sang their music!

You can hear a lot of Buddy's playing when you listen to Hendrix, SRV, Mayer, etc. He invented the "strat sound", and music wouldn't be the same without it.
