The Beach Boys - Live on Ready Steady Go! 1964

Uploaded by: humanoidboogie
Video Description:
The Beach Boys' first UK TV appearance, November 6, 1964.
Following afternoon rehearsals, their performance of 'I Get Around' and 'When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)' - complete with false start - is transmitted live this evening. The show's co-host Keith Fordyce asks Mike about surfing and Brian about his thoughts on Britain, but questions and replies are dro
wned out by hysterical screams from the studio audience. This performance becomes the first chance that TV viewers in the UK have to see the group in action. Brian tells Earl Leaf: "Ready Steady Go! was a blast! But they pulled Mike into the crowd off camera, which was kind of stupid."

Outstanding, Denny shredding the drums, Mike proving he was an important part of the BB sound (before becoming a professional asshole). As cheery as Brian's compositions are, there is always a hint of melancholy. I guess true geniuses are supposed to be tortured.

I get the impression from the false start at the beginning of the second song that this was live- is that so? If so, very cool because 60s TV very often relied upon dubbed performances.

The Beach Boys were able to produce the same sound in concert as they did in the studio. It's utterly amazing. The false start at the beginning of When I Grow Up to Be a Man is just more proof that it was a live performance.

They're a different band live than in the studio. The Beach Boys did little more than sing on many of their albums (except for Brian). The instrumentation was provided by "The Wrecking Crew", who also played on albums by The Byrds, The Partridge Family, The Monkees, etc. These bands were basically the Milli Vanilli of the 60's.
