Interesting to look at Wimbledon's great champions. First it was Laver, then Borg came along who was better, then Mcenroe dethroned Borg and became champ for a short period, then Becker came along and became the dominant player, then Pete Sampras came along and became Wimbledon's most dominant grass courter in over a hundred years with 7 titles. Then Fed dethroned Pete and became Wimbledon's current king. Pete IMO is the best Wimbledon champ with Fed trailing close behind.

Yeah good points you made. I think Fed has the potential to be even more dominant than Pete, only Nadal can stop him it seems..if he can win on the grass.

They changed the grass at Wimbledon, the word is, would Sampras have won so many titles on the new Wimbledon grass courts? Many Pro's think not...
The new grass ... ( 3 months ago by Samprasisthebest)
The new grass courts could be considered an abomination, or a disgrace to Wimbledon. The new grass allows the ball to bounce higher, effectively taking AWAY the incentive to serve and volley. Wimbledon is supposed to be HOME to the serve and volleyer. Sampras won more titles in the Open Era at Wimbledon than any other male (on actual slick grass) and for that deserves recognition as Wimbledon's greatest champion.

Becker one of the best grass court players of all-time. He is 17 years old here. Forget trying to compare players. At 17, at Wimbledon no one would have beaten Becker.

I dont think he could. It is disgraceful that some of the greatest grass court players in history would now struggle, because the grass is playing more like Roland Garros. Dont you agree?
I agree with you. I ... ( 3 months ago by monthejoe)
I agree with you. I am an enormous Federer fan, but even I can admit that Roger is still behind Pete in Wimbledon terms. I think he would have surpassed him, but the way the grass has changed, I can't see Roger surpassing Pete.

It is too bad that Wimbledon is becoming like Rolland Garros. In Pete's day, Nadal would NEVER have gotten past the quarters of Wimby. Now, everything is slowing down so much that Rafa could be the first man since Laver to win a Calendar slam.
I think it is more ... ( 3 months ago by monthejoe)
I think it is more extreme than that. I don't think Nadal would have made it past the second round with his game.

Kind of like how Pete didn't make it past the second round of Rolland Garros in his late twenties? How quaint. You are probably right.

It is almost a mirror image from what you have said. I'm no expert on Pete's career, but I know he reached the semis, and 3 quarter finals. Did the surface change there as well? It is horrible to see the change in the Wimbledon surface though, from as late as 2003. The balls bounced lower and faster.
No, Rolland Garros ... ( 3 months ago by Samprasisthebest)
No, Rolland Garros didn't change its surface at all. The reason for the change in his results was that from about 1990-96 he was an all court player, like Federer, who could do pretty much everything, but was slightly more competent at net (like how Fed is slightly more competent at the baseline). However, from about 97-2002, Pete became more of a Serve and Volleyer and both first and second serves on all surfaces, and on clay, serve and volleyers have never really done well.
I agree with you. ... ( 2 months ago by kerstenfanatic)
I agree with you. I think Federer, Roddick, Hewitt, Karlovic, Ancic are all examples of players hurt by this slower grass while the biggest beneficiary of all is Nadal. It isnt fair to have two French Opens. They did it since the clay courters used to whine and boycott Wimbledon so now they cater the event to them. What nonsense. Let the babies stay home, dont cater to them.
Give me a break. ... ( 2 months ago by Samprasisthebest)
Give me a break. Who did Becker play in the final? Not an actual serve and volleyer, but a baseliner who had the huge disadvantage at Wimbledon. At age 19, Sampras beat Lendl, Mcenroe, and then Agassi to win the US Open. At 17, he could easily have beaten a 17 year old Becker to win Wimbledon.
Sampras would have ... ( 2 months ago by weiserr74)
Sampras would have never beaten Becker in the mid-to-late 80's at Wimbledon. Please. Did you watch tennis?
I think you need to look at their head-to-head results on all surfaces. It's pretty even for the most part, but to suggest that Sampras was half the player as Becker was at age 17, is absurd.
"It's pretty even ... ( 2 months ago by Samprasisthebest)
"It's pretty even for the most part..." Uh,actually Pete's record against Boris was 12-7, so not really. This quality of play is very low compared to the times of 19 year old Sampras. For instance the passing shot at 2:44 would never have been a passing shot against somebody of the 90s era. 90s=more power and more precision than the eighties, in other words, you had to have more than a big serve and decent volleys to win Wimbledon, and Sampras in his prime was WAY better than Becker.

what? why? did u see how well he played in the final? he barely lost it, and he has all the motivation in the world for revenge. and he's 27 or 28. even with all the changes on the surfaces federer has stayed on top because he has the game for all surfaces.

What I said is that I don't think he will win 8 Wimbledon titles. The grass is too slow. I think he will win more slams. Trust me, I'm as much of a fan as it is possible to be, but I'm just realistic.
i can see him in ... ( 1 month ago by demondayzzz)
i can see him in wimbledon finals for another 5 years atleast, winning 3 more is quite possible. nadal and federer are unmatched on grass, and nadal had to play the match of his life twice to only just prevail once. if federer is mentally sharp and doesnt throw away crucial service games, he'll win every time.

Am I understanding correctly? Are you suggesting that Federer is only "slightly more competent at the baseline" than Sampras? So, in your opinion, if they played GROUND STROKE games when they were both at the top of their game they would pretty much play even??? (On a sidenote, how do you think Agassi and Roddick (to name 2) would answer the same question?)
