I miss watching Steffi play and just listening to her share her thoughts about what she was feeling at the time is fantastic because she's always been quite subdued and private as a person. What a gracious champion.

I heard she was a pretty quite person... I've never seen her play on tv, I'm only 16 and I started watching tv december 2002, the US open quarter finals, with Venus Williams, from that point I loved her and I still am a big fan of the Williams sisters!!!

Very few players could be considered "all around", in that they could do everything on any surface. Graf was one of them.

Well, probably. But I get the impression that Steffi had a better balance of baseline and net play than the Williams sisters. Your thoughts on this?

Definitely. Steffi's balance was unique. The Williams sisters are mostly baseline players. They don't have a good volley. They are hammering all around the court. No slice, no volley, but still successful. Especially Venus is a great athlete.
Nevertheless, if I had to choose between Steffi and Venus, I would choose Steffi because her game was variable and worth watching at all courts. I miss her style. No current players are able to play as pretty as Steffi Graf, at least at the WTA.

Well I don't know, Williams is very impressive at the net, I mean Venus Williams, she has great smaches and volley's!

I know what you mean. She's good at the net but she has no typical volley. Look at Steffi's last point at the ninth game in the third set against Jana Novotna - that's a volley.
You have said it right before...Venus makes her points with smashes, even at the net. It's great and successful, particularly in Wimbledon. You know, I'm just not a friend of the power tennis generation. Its a bit monotonous for me. :)

I think it has something to do with how the game has evolved as well. You know, technical changes to the courts, raquets etc. It's not just the players' fault the game is faster and less variable today.

You're right. These things definitely play a role. Nevertheless, tennis on the ATP is still variable today. I'm watching US Open right now and even Andy Roddick plays slices on the backhand side. :) Not to mention Federer, Gonzalez...

Totally agree and nicely said! I miss the way players then crafted a point. Steffi, Chris, Martina, even Gaby had such charachter in their game. Truly miss those days, those players.

Steffi played some great finals here in Wimbledon which will be remembered forever. 1987- her first wimbledon title against the great Navratilova who won it six consecutive years before 1991- thriller against Sabatini which Graf won 8:6 in the 3rd set 1993- epic final against Novotna where Graf was down 1:4 in the 3rd set but won 5 games in a row to win it 6:4 1995-great final against Sanchez Vicario where Graf won the crucial 11th game in the 3rd set which lasted more than 20 exciting minutes
