It was not about a mental institution, it was (sort of) about a train station. It was written by Jack Bruce (bass player) and Pete Brown (a poet who was the song-writer for Cream behind the scenes). Jack supposedly wrote the guitar chops, and Pete wrote colorful phrases around the theme of waiting at a train station (obviously) while tripping on drugs (it was the 60's afterall). I think it is Eric's best solo for Cream, and probably for his entire career. But that's just my opinion.

Yeah, where I came from we weren't that enthusiastic about Cream either - but we used to spray paint 'Clapton is St Anthony of Padua' on the walls as a compromise.

The simple answer is we lost. By "we" I mean all of us who care for music, and all of them who tried to change the music business to favor the artist. The labels won. We now get The Jonah Brothers and Miley Cyrus who admit maybe a five or ten second lead-guitar solo admist the muck that is pre-teenage sound. If I may borrow from the melody of this tune, "We came on a time when we could have changed all the world ... instead we find that the powers that be stay the same. In the white room."
