In response to the affordable housing crisis and gentrification in South Florida, activists have squatted a publicly owned vacant lot and built a shantytown to house the homeless. I spent 24 hours in the Umoja Village and discovered a community in the making.

This is an incredible ignorant and childish view of that proverb. Have you ever heard the saying, "Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime"? That applies to these people. They have the resources to better themselves but want free hand outs, and that's taking advantage of the goodness of American's who're barely getting by in their own life, then you want to increase their taxes to help to the ignorant and lazy?

I can't feel a tremendous amount of sympathy for these people because they live in a country where they can both go to school as well as borrow books at a library to educate themselves, for free, which will give them a better life than living in plywood shacks, speaking Ebonics and waiting for the government to give you hands out. They want to retain their ignorant urban culture while receiving the same benefits of an educated, non-lazy, person and that's wrong.

Choosing to be illiterate and ignorant than expecting your life to be better is ridiculous. They're MANY places in the world where one cannot easily receive an education, but the USA is not one of them. I've lived in a city all my life and I don't come from a wealthy family; so I don't have sympathy for those who wallow around expecting handouts when they choose to go through life as ignorant bums. Broken system? Have you seen how the rest of the world lives? Almost half the worlds population lives off less than 2 American dollars a day. We're so spoiled here that we think the government has to give us a life: they don't. We have so many opportunities but we have to make an effort to achieve them, and I just don't see it in these people who refuse to pick-up a book or go back to school to better themselves.

I believe in charity but I also believe that it's not a one-way system, with the exception of the disabled. Charity is to help people get off their feet when they have no other options, but these people do have options. They can give-up their hip-hop culture and go back to school instead of leeching off the system. You want a house? Work for it like everyone else does. Even Habitat for Humanity makes sure you're not a lazy leech before building you a home.

I live in Colorado and during the 90's and early 00's people were displaced in large numbers when the affordable housing was bought out and turned into condos, lofts and townhomes for the upwardly mobile, only to have the places sitting vacant less than 10 years later due to the failing economy.
Many of the people who lost their homes where white and had to try to find new apts in a place where rents and deposits had gone up 100 - 200%. It's not about race, it's poor people who suffer.
