They're not saying that football fans are stupid. They're commenting (quite bloody rightly if you ask me) on the habit of football fans to use the whole "us lot"/"you lot" thing - no fan is ever involved in the game, so they literally didn't do anything which could be seen as contributing to the game effort. Therefore, they have no right to claim that "we" thrashed "you" or any of that kind of bollocks.

Genius. I loved football at school. I enjoy playing the game. If some people want to feel like they 'belong' to a group of people they admire by buying expensive shirts and pretending they or 'we' had a great part in the successes of a team they could never hope to play for...well, thats up to them.
